Sebastian’s Bistro – Review

Sebastian’s Bistro, located in Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort offers an ‘all you care to eat’ style service featuring some of their family-style dishes with a ‘Caribbean infusion’.

If you’re like me and a slightly fussy eater in which you’re often fearful of leaving your food comfort zone, you might look at the menu and have some doubts. I did. But before I get into the nitty gritty of the food, let’s take a look at the pricing.

Sebastian’s adult menu is $38 per person, with $20 per child (ages 3-9) plus tax and gratuity. For a family of 4 for example with two adults and two children you’re looking at around $100+ for your dining experience which gets you a selection of Caribbean inspired dishes, this is however, also before additional entrees or sides or drinks added to the final bill. To add, this is also a non-character dining experience.

To compare this to another ‘family-style’ restaurant, the Liberty Tree Tavern in Magic Kingdom, charges a slightly higher price of $42 per adult and $23 per child plus gratuity and tax. I do however feel you get slightly more for your money at this restaurant, plus the food options may cater better to those that prefer a much more homely style of cooking (I’ll post a review of our experience here as well!). The pricing I would say is a reflection on location though rather than quality, as both restaurants offered a fantastic selection and atmosphere but one is obviously in the centre of the theme park and another is at a resort, so it’s a toss up over whether you want a location restaurant with the convenience of park access, or a nice quiet sit down meal in a resort where you can have a nosey around and experience a Disney resort. It’s personal preference.

Looking at the menu of Sebastian’s, they have a set selection of a starter, main and dessert which you can eat as much as you care to.

The buttery house baked rolls are *chefs kiss* brilliant. They are what they say they are, they arrive fresh and warm and I urge you to have more than one serving if you can because they are great to pair with your main course. The guava butter left me sceptical at first as I like just plain old butter with my rolls but this was actually a pleasant surprise. It was slightly sweet but paired nicely with the rolls. The added touch of a Mickey shaped cheese biscuit was also a lovely addition!

As well as the rolls to start there’s also a spice necklace salad which features mixed greens, pumpkin seeds and tropical fruit. Again, as a seasoned fussy eater I wasn’t overly drawn to the salad but it was refreshing and a nice touch to the menu. I’d probably compare my taste in food to that of a 12 year old whereby I prefer the more sweet dishes and homely foods rather than the exotic one’s but this was a memorable starter. I’m not sure if it is more of a states thing rather than the UK but adding fruit to a plain old salad really kicks it up a notch, it’s not something I had come across before eating here!

Moving onto the main event; the Taste Of The Caribbean ! In this you’ll receive a selection of oven-roasted citrus chicken as well as slow-cooked mojo pork, grilled beef and baked fish. To pair with the meats you’ll also receive some cilantro rice and beans as well as a vegetable stew and grilled seasoned vegetables.

The cilantro rice was a little bland for my liking however the meats were amazing. The slow cooked pork and baked fish were definitely up there with my favourites of the meal, so much so that we did indeed order a second and third portion. I would recommend asking for a second plate of meats (it is ‘all you care to eat’ after all), as the portion you will initially receive will definitely not feed a group larger than 3 or 4. We had 4 adults in our party and whilst it got us started, we did ask for more. Again, it’s an all you care to eat style so that’s is probably why they don’t overload your plates to begin with.

The vegetables weren’t overly memorable but they were a great addition to the meat selection.

And finally , dessert. This too was a *chefs kiss* moment. I am a big fan of the banana bread pudding in Ohana’s at the Polynesian Resort, and this certainly knocked a few dessert contenders off the list of my favourites. The coconut, pineapple bread pudding comes with a caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream which is served warm. The portion doesn’t look huge in the photo’s but trust me, it’s enough! This is probably their highlight of the menu and I would recommend you go, even if it is just for this dessert.

Moving on to drinks, I’ll pop a link below to the menu of the restaurant because the drinks list is huge. If you’re a lover of rums and cocktails you will be happy here because their range is vast. From a classic Pina Colada to a Goombay Smash and Tallawah Punch, I’d recommend you have a good look at their drinks because there’s lots. I for one am not a huge drinker when it comes to alcohol, as you will probably see by my photo’s I am a typical Brit and can sit quite happily in the heat with a cup of tea! But that’s not to say that there weren’t a variety of drink choices, there were, I just didn’t try them so didn’t want to offer an opinion on them!

Moving onto the overall theming and feel of the restaurant; it’s very peaceful. If you’re looking for somewhere quiet with little hustle and bustle going on around you, this is perfect. It features soft touches of Little Mermaid themed décor ranging from sea-themed tableware and furniture to calm music, it is offers a more ‘adult’ atmosphere whilst gently reminding you that you are in fact still in the depths of a Disney resort.

You might think that as it is classed as a Little Mermaid themed restaurant that it is great for children, I personally wouldn’t hype this up to the super fans, simply because it isn’t the sort of restaurant that offers a character experience. Unless the kids are happy with the subtle Disney-touches, I would perhaps look at another restaurant on site somewhere rather than here.

Just a handy tip of mine!! Given the location of Sebastian’s, it is very close to both Hollywood Studio’s and Epcot, so if you time your visit just right, there’s nothing stopping you from finishing your meal and sitting on one of the many relaxed beaches at The Caribbean Beach Resort and watching the Epcot fireworks, because, as we quickly discovered whilst staying at the resort, you can get a very good view of them! If you get a good enough seat in the restaurant, overlooking the lake out front, this is also a great firework watching spot!

The location of the restaurant is quite easy to get to; as mentioned above, it is close to two of the parks and is reachable via the Sky Liner, or shuttle bus. If you’re staying at one of the other resorts on the Sky Liner such as Pop Century or Art of Animation, this would be a great place to visit as the Caribbean Beach Resort itself is lightly themed all throughout and we often saw characters walking through the lobby areas during our stay (so if you’re wanting to meet a character or two without the queue, then this is for you!).

I would love to know your thoughts on the restaurant if you have visited recently or in the past. How did you find it ?
